Country music superstar Carrie Underwood has opened up about a personal moment with former President Donald Trump that took place right after his inauguration in 2017. In a new interview, Underwood recalled the brief but significant exchange between the two, shedding light on the kind words Trump whispered to her during a private moment after her performance at the inaugural ball.
Underwood, who performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Trump's inauguration, has kept details of her interaction with the then-president largely to herself over the years. But now, years later, she’s revealing what Trump whispered to her, offering a rare glimpse into that pivotal day.
According to Underwood, after her performance, Trump leaned in and told her, “That was beautiful. You’ve got an incredible voice. We’re lucky to have you.” She describes the moment as a brief but heartfelt exchange, one that stood out amid the whirlwind of events following the inauguration. “It was unexpected, but it meant a lot,” Underwood said with a smile. “You never really know what to expect when you’re in that kind of environment, and I was honored to be part of such a historic day. For him to take a moment and say something kind, it really stuck with me.”
Though Underwood is known for her down-to-earth personality, she admitted that performing at such a high-profile event was a bit intimidating. "It was surreal, really," she said. "You’re standing there, in front of the whole world, and you just hope you do justice to the song. But hearing that little compliment from him made me feel a little more at ease."
The moment has remained a personal memory for Underwood, and despite her political leanings, she expressed appreciation for the kindness shown by the then-president. “It was just a nice, human moment,” she reflected. “Regardless of politics, we can all agree that we appreciate kindness when we see it.”
